DIVE WITH BULL SHARKS IN THE CLEAR BLUE WATERS OF THE MAYAN RIVIERA!

Join the best bull shark feed in the Americas at Playa del Carmen. Each winter from November till March, large female bull sharks congregate close to the beaches of Quintanaroo.

Encounters vary from just a few sharks to upwards of 20 individuals on any given dive. The shark feeds take place in 20-25m of water a mere ten minutes boat ride from shore making this an easy morning and afternoon excursion.

After the dives guests will have plenty of time to enjoy Playa del Carmen which has a reputation as the playground of Mexico.

A note on the Bull Sharks of Playa del Carmen and unscrupulous fishermen.

Bull sharks have been visiting Quintanaroo over the winter months for many years. Five or six years ago, a smart dive shop owner named Chino Loria decided to try feeding the sharks to drive a little more business to his shop. It was a huge success and he became the leading shark diving operator in the area.

Then in 2009, fishermen from the surrounding villages who were not making any money from the shark interactions, sailed into Playa del Carmen and fished out all the bull sharks. It was a tragic day the local bull shark population, devastating for the local ecosystem and a sad day for Chino who had built up a very personal relationship with many of the sharks.

Chino wanted to prove that the bull sharks could not handle that kind of intense fishing pressure so I put him in touch with Dr Mauricio Hoyos; a white shark researcher that I had worked with at Guadalupe Island. Since then, Mauricio has started an acoustic tagging program with the sharks (you may see sharks with tags on our dives). Initially, he is trying to find out how far the sharks migrate and what they do each day when they're not attending the shark feeds. He is also collecting DNA to see how closely related the sharks are to eachother.

Chino approached the city council and managed to get an agreement put in place to stop the fishermen from shark fishing anywhere along the beaches of Playa del Carmen. He continues to lobby for greater protection for the sharks.

Although I have wanted to run trips to Playa for the last few years, I have held off because I was concerned that the feeds were leading the sharks straight into the hands of the fishermen. With the new agreement in place, the sharks are in much better shape and I feel that its finally time to responsibly run this trip. So, please join me for the running of the bulls!
